“Who will guard the guards themselves” By Pratchaya Phinthong
ฝ่ายนิทรรศการ หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร ร่วมกับ gb agency นำเสนอผลงานของศิลปิน ปรัชญา พิณทอง ในมุมมองความคิดระหว่างพื้นที่และสภาพสังคมและการเมืองในปัจจุบัน รวมถึงเรื่องเล่าและประสบการณ์การรับรู้ที่แตกต่าง
ผลงานชิ้นนี้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของนิทรรศการเดี่ยวของปรัชญา พิณทองที่ gb agency กรุงปารีส ประเทศฝรั่งเศส และจัดที่หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร ระหว่างวันที่ 28 พฤษภาคมถึง 19 มิถุนายน 2558 ที่ gb agency ระหว่างวันที่ 28 พฤษภาคมถึง 18 กรกฎาคม 2558
Who will guard the guards themselves เป็นนิทรรศการศิลปะที่เกิดขึ้นพร้อมกันในปารีสและกรุงเทพ จากที่ตั้งทางภูมิศาสตร์ทั้งสอง ปรัชญา พิณทองได้สร้างเรื่องเล่าและประสบการณ์การรับรู้ที่แตกต่างกันขึ้น ในนิทรรศการเดี่ยวครั้งล่าสุดที่ gb agency ปรัชญาจัดการกับความห่างไกลของพื้นที่ที่แยกนิทรรศการที่ปารีสออกจากที่ บ้านของเขาในกรุงเทพให้เป็นเสมือนเครื่องกรองเพื่อให้ชีวิตแก่พื้นที่และเวลาที่แยกความเป็นจริงออกจากภาพตัวแทน
จุดเริ่มต้นของโครงการนี้คือภาพถ่ายหน้าร้านเซเว่น อีเลฟเว่นตอนกลางคืนที่ศิลปินถ่ายเอาไว้ 3 สัปดาห์หลังจากที่กองทัพไทยได้ประกาศเคอร์ฟิวในเมืองหลวง อันเป็นผลสืบเนื่องมาจากการทำรัฐประหารเมื่อวันที่ 22 พฤษภาคม 2557 ร้านเซเว่น อีเลฟเว่นคือดรรชนีของการพานิชย์แบบโลกาภิวัฒน์ที่ทำธุรกิจตลอด 24 ชั่วโมง ภาพถ่ายหน้าร้านเซเว่น อีเลฟเว่นที่ถึงแม้ว่าจะมีแสงไฟแต่ก็ปิดทำการจึงกลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความหายนะแห่งชีวิตประจำวันที่การควบคุมปราบปรามได้ก่อให้เกิดขึ้น ศิลปินจัดแสดงภาพดังกล่าวในเวลาเดียวกันที่ปารีสและกรุงเทพ โดยนิทรรศการที่กรุงเทพจะอยู่ในแกลเลอรีจำลองที่ตั้งอยู่ที่ลานหน้าหอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร พื้นที่ในกรุงเทพจะได้รับการบันทึกและเผยแพร่ไปยังปารีสตามเวลาจริง แกลเลอรี่ในปารีสที่จำลองไว้ที่กรุงเทพนี้มีลักษณะกึ่งจริงกึ่งลวง ตั้งอยู่ที่จุดตัดระหว่างพื้นที่เชิงสถาบันกับพื้นที่สาธารณะ และจะถูกส่งมอบให้กับมหาวิทยาลัยเพื่อเป็นพื้นที่แสดงงานศิลปะเคลื่อนที่สำหรับนักศึกษาต่อไป
การทำสำเนาพื้นที่แสดงงานศิลปะเอกชนของฝรั่งเศสขึ้นในพื้นที่สาธารณะของกรุงเทพได้สร้างระยะห่างระหว่างตัวสถานการณ์ ภาพตัวแทนของสถานการณ์นั้น และการส่งผ่านถ่ายเทเพื่อสร้างอนุสาวรีย์แห่งการควบคุมที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะกาลขึ้น ทั้งยังตั้งคำถามถึงความสามารถในการแสดงออกของศิลปะในพื้นที่สาธารณะ

‘Who will guard the guards themselves’ is the title of an exhibition involving two
cities Paris and Bangkok: from two geographical points Pratchaya Phinthong
builds a narrative and creates different perceptual experiences. For the new solo exhibition at gb agency, Phinthong targets the distance that separates the Paris exhibition from his home in Bangkok as a kind of filter in order to energise space and time which separate reality from its representation.
Starting point of the whole project is a photograph taken at night by the artist
after a military coup on 22 May 2014 and three weeks of army imposed curfew in the Thai capital. The image is of a storefront 7-Eleven—an early indicator of
global commerce doing business 24/7—which here has been deserted and,
though lit up and nonetheless closed for business, becomes a symbol of the
devastation of daily life brought on by repression. Simultaneously, this image will
be presented in Paris and in Bangkok through the replica of the gallery space
placed in front of the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center. The space in Bangkok will be recorded and diffused real time in Paris. The represented space of the
Parisian gallery in Bangkok, half real half fictional positioned at the junction
between institution and public space will be then given to a university to become
a mobile exhibition space for students.
By duplicating a private exhibiting gallery in the public space in Bangkok the artist creates a distance between a situation, its representation and transmission and produces a temporary monument under control, and questions art capacity to express in the public sphere.
